Placemaking is a multi-layered process within which citizens foster active, engaged relationships to the spaces which they inhabit, the landscapes of their lives, and shape those spaces in a way which creates a sense of communal stewardship and lived connection. In this workshop, we will talk about the deeper implications of Placemaking and community development. Drawing from the many years of City Repair's work in the communities of Portland and the profound principles and wisdom of eastern spirituality, we will look at the role Placemaking plays in individual and collective enlightenment and how we can solve many problems by solving only one.

Michael Cook has a Bachelors of Science in Sustainable Living/Environmental Studies from Maharishi University of Management in Iowa, and completed his degree with a certification in Permaculture design. He was a member of a world-champion team which competed in team-based creative problem-solving competitions for most of his education. Michael spearheaded the placemaking process of 21 sites for the Village Building Convergence 2009, City Repair’s annual Placemaking event. He is currently heading up a team of 5 interns and a mobile tea house, actively working with a handful of communities around Portland.
